The commemoration of the 1821 uprising against the Ottoman empire takes place in Heraklion each year in April.
The wine in Crete complements the delicious local food very well and the annual wine festival held in Rethymnon in June is a great opportunity to find one you like.
You can enjoy performances by classical musicians over a period of six days throughout the Makrigialos during the Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival held each year.
Enjoy local Cretan culture during July at the Yakintha Festival which is held annually.
Also in July Rethymnon adopts a Venetian theme for the yearly Renaissance Festival.
During the first ten days of August the coastal town of Palaiochora (Paleohora) holds it’s annual low key musical event the Paleohora Music Festival.
There is another food based event held in Stia each year during August, the Sultana Festival.
Every year from July to September you can enjoy a variety of artistic events during the Heraklion summer festival.
October is the month for the annual Chestnut Festival held in the traditional village of Elos.
